Free Community Distribution Site in Lakeway supported by volunteers of the Central Texas Mycology Society.
Healthy soil starts undergroundโand fungi are one of natureโs most powerful tools for building thriving landscapes. Local residents are invited to pick up recycled mushroom blocks to grow their own edible mushrooms and/or enhance the soil in their gardens, around trees, in compost systems, or throughout their landscapes.

What Are Mushroom Blocks?

Mushroom blocks are a blend of sawdust, grains, nutrients, and living mycelium (the underground fungal network that supports healthy ecosystems). After commercial mushroom growers harvest their first crop, these blocks still contain tremendous value for personal use: to grow more mushrooms, as well as for use in gardens and landscapes.
Benefits for Your Landscape
Improve Soil Health
Mushroom blocks add valuable organic matter and beneficial fungi to the soil, helping improve structure, nutrient availability, and overall plant health.
Save Water
The mycelium inside mushroom blocks helps soil retain moisture and improve water infiltrationโespecially important in the rocky, clay-heavy soils common in Central Texas.
Support Trees & Native Plants
Adding mushroom blocks beneath mulch around trees and planting beds helps create healthier root environments while supporting beneficial microorganisms.
Accelerate Composting
Mushroom blocks help break down leaves, plant debris, and food scraps more quickly, making them a great addition to compost systems.
Reduce Waste
Commercial mushroom production creates significant organic waste. By reusing these blocks locally, our community helps keep valuable material out of landfills while reducing methane emissions.
Easy Ways to Use Mushroom Blocks

- Grow more mushrooms (tips: keep the block outside, in a shady spot and check on it regularly. Harvest mushrooms before caps curl upward to reduce spore release)
- Mix into garden beds
- Add beneath mulch around trees
- Use in compost piles or trench composting
- Layer into lawn replacement projects
- Blend with mulch for fungal-rich soil building
For mulch applications, a good starting point is approximately 4 mushroom blocks per bag of mulch.
A Few Helpful Tips
- Store and use outdoors
- Mushrooms may continue to grow from the blocks and are all edible!
- No gloves are required unless you have sensitivities
- Green mold (Trichoderma) is beneficial for garden soils
